More about potmanteau words. Lewis Carol coined this word in 'Through the looking glass' Humpty Dumpty used the word slithy, which is a combination of lithe and slimy and said, 'you see, it's like a portmanteau - there are two meanings packed into one word'

We now use portmanteau words all the time. The internet is full of them. In fact, the word Internet is a portmanteau word - international + network. Other internet portmanteau words include modem - modulator + demodulator, blog - web + log and netiquette - internet + etiquette. Can you think of anymore relating to the internet?

Portmanteau words

An ever increasing number of portmanteau words (blended words) have joined our vocabularly. Probably most known one, is brunch, but of course, such words as nylon and moped are two words joined together, and have been in use for a very long time. It can be fun making-up portmanteau words, and before you know it, they become part of regular speech.
Let's have your new words, please.

The Eden Project

With everybody so much more concerned about the environment these days, we have decided to include a trip to The Eden Project for our Torquay students. It is a wonderful place to visit and is a feast for the eyes as well as being educationally stimulating. The Eden Project is also studied by many students, as part of their school syllabus, and so, to be able to visit this magnificent area of conservation, and experience it first hand, is an added bonus.
Book one of our English Language Courses in Torquay and visit The Eden Project. http://www.edenproject.com/whats-it-all-about/index.php
